He took a coil of nylon washing line, a weight from an old set of dumb-bells and a leg of lamb from the store’s spare freezer back in the out-house. The lamb would thaw by dusk, and the nylon line was less likely to carry human scent than any of the other cord he could find.

“You sure you don’t mind?” he asked Skye, as he was preparing to set off. He’d suggested he could set up the trap on his way to the estate offices at the castle, but had worried that she might feel she was missing out.

“It’s fine,” she assured him. “Like you say, both of us going again just increases the chance we’ll leave too much scent behind. You know: pheromones.”

He felt the color rising to his face again. What had she done to him?

“And you’ll be okay on your own?” he said. “We’d just made plans...”

Her hand on his arm as they stood there in the back yard. A smile. “Go. This is a great opportunity. I’m really pleased for you. Now go.”

She stretched up on tiptoes and kissed him on the cheek, her lips lingering for a second.

“At least you can put your perfume on again, now,” he said. “I like it.”

“Are you saying I smell?”

He backed away, laughing, wondering how it was that she could run circles round him whenever she wanted.

Turning the enclosure into a trap didn’t take much effort at all. The nylon washing line was perfect for hanging the leg of lamb, hooking over a branch and running across to hold the gate open. When the weight of the lamb was removed, another cord attached to a weight would pull the gate closed and that catch on the outside would click into place. The enclosure could almost have been built for this purpose.

Setting this up had seemed like a good idea when he was with Skye, but then almost anything might seem a good idea when he was with her.

Now, however, out here on his own, he was starting to have second thoughts. Would anyone from the estate notice and ask awkward questions? He was doing this on Carr’s land, using Carr’s property, without permission. The last thing he wanted was to cause problems with the estate at a time like this.

He pulled a cluster of needles from a pine sapling nearby and rubbed them along the nylon line and over the gate where he’d held it to attach the line. On his way he’d stopped and collected some sheep’s wool from a fence, and now he rubbed this over the line and anything else he’d touched, too – the smell of damp sheep would mask almost anything!

Nothing would come of this, he knew. Crows or pine martens might have a go at the meat, but the possibility that a wolf would find it, ignoring any human scents that lingered, and trigger the trap was remote to say the least. Truth be told, he was doing this to impress Skye: practical man who knows the woods like no other.
